First-time manager training in Malaysia

Promoted for your expertise. Now what?

You were promoted to manager because you were good at your work, whether that was closing the accounts, writing the code, running the lab, caring for patients or hitting the sales target. From now on, you are judged on your team. Gradeline Leadership is a first-time manager training programme for every field, being built in Malaysia as four rungs from your first team to the board. Each rung is designed to end with work you can use in your job straight away.

The leadership ladder

Four rungs, from your first team to the board.

Start at the rung you are on. Each rung is a leadership training programme for the step you are taking now. You bring a real problem from your own work and leave with the finished piece of work.

01

First-time Manager

First-time manager training for new team leads, line managers and supervisors in any field. For people promoted for their expertise to lead the team they used to work in.

  • Delegating work you could do faster yourself, from the month-end close to the code review
  • Planning and prioritising a team's week when everything arrives marked urgent
  • Performance conversations, including the one you have been putting off
  • Managing the peers you used to sit beside

Designed to end withA 90-day plan for your team, and a difficult conversation rehearsed before you have it.

02

Commercial Acumen

Finance for non-finance managers. For managers in IT, operations, sales, science and healthcare who now answer for a budget.

  • Reading a P&L and a cash flow statement
  • A capex or headcount business case, written in the language finance reads
  • Contract management with vendors, before and after you sign
  • Negotiation skills with suppliers, clients and your own senior management

Designed to end withA business case for a real spending decision in your team.

03

Leading the Function

Strategic planning and change management for heads of department. For leaders in any function who now set the direction others deliver.

  • A strategy for one function, on one page
  • Change management that outlasts the launch memo, from a new finance system to a new clinic workflow
  • Stakeholder management when the people you need do not report to you
  • Making decisions from the data your team already collects

Designed to end withA one-page strategy for your department, defended to a panel.

04

Board Readiness

From specialist report to board paper. For senior leaders who now write for the board, and new directors. Practical work, not a director qualification.

  • How to write a board paper that asks for a clear decision
  • Explaining risk in a board paper, from a data breach to a supplier failing
  • Reading the numbers as a director does
  • Corporate governance and directors' duties: the questions to put to your company secretary and counsel

Designed to end withA board paper on a real decision, reviewed by a mock board.

When the years are there

Chartered Manager (CMgr). Once you have the years in management that the Chartered Management Institute asks for, you may be eligible for its CMgr assessment. The Chartered Route for CMgr prepares you for it, and CMI's conditions are on that page in CMI's own words. These rungs are Gradeline training, not CMI's, and they do not count towards CMgr. Your years of managing do. See the CMgr programme

Why it is built this way

If it isn't written down, it wasn't done.

Engineers sign off their calculations. Auditors keep working papers. Scientists keep lab notebooks. Nurses chart every dose. Every profession already runs on this rule.

Gradeline mentors engineers in Malaysia towards UK Chartered Engineer (CEng) registration, where a professional review judges written evidence against a published standard. Gradeline Leadership is being built on the same habit, for managers in every field, with a delivery partner to be announced.

Precision

Plain words, exact figures and a clear ask. Your reader knows what you want decided by the end of the first paragraph.

Evidence

You argue from your own team's numbers and records. A finance manager and a ward manager use different data. The discipline is the same.

Written work

Each rung is designed to end with a document you keep: a 90-day plan, a business case, a one-page strategy, a board paper.

Masterclasses

Specialists write to be correct. Boards read to decide.

Single-skill sessions at any rung, for people trained in something other than management. Most close the gap between those two sentences: business writing, presentation skills and communication training.

In development

Writing for decision-makers

Memos, proposals and papers that get a decision at the first reading.

In development

Presenting technical risk to a board

What could go wrong, how likely it is and what it would cost, explained to a room that does not share your training.

In development

Executive communication

Saying less, in the right order, to the people who decide.

In development

Coaching and mentoring

Growing the people behind you, so you can step up.

In development

Leading across cultures

Working with clients, suppliers and teams from across the region.

For teams

New managers from every function. One ladder.

For HR and L&D teams looking for a leadership training provider in Malaysia for new managers across the company, from finance to the front line. Every format can use your own work as the material, so what gets done in the room is work your company needed anyway.

Four formats are planned. None is running yet.

In-house cohort

One rung of the ladder, run for your new managers at your office.

Action-learning sprint

A team, from one function or several, works on a real company problem over several weeks, then presents it to its own leadership.

Open classes

One or two seats at a time, alongside people from other companies.

Executive coaching

One to one, for leaders at the function and board rungs.
