For experienced managers · Chartered Manager

You've led people for years. Put it after your name.

Chartered Manager (CMgr) is the Chartered Management Institute's title for experienced managers, and CMI assesses it on work you have already done: a written account of how you lead, then an online discussion with an independent assessor. Hj. Mazlee Md. Ramli, CMgr FCMI, marks your application by hand and rehearses that discussion with you.

You pay nothing until you register. If your years don't meet CMI's criteria yet, we'll tell you at the first conversation.

Chartered Manager requirements

Two ways in. Both start with your years.

We prepare candidates for CMI's Full Assessment route. In CMI's words, it asks for "a degree level qualification that is management, business or leadership focused; plus 3 years' experience in a management role", or "at least 5 years' management experience (equivalent to Level 5 or operational / senior management)".

01

Engineers on The Chartered Route who manage people

You are already writing your career down for a UK review panel, and that panel looks for your leadership. CMgr asks for the same leadership, told in full, to a different body. Same mentor, RM2,500 on top of CEng.

02

Managers in any field, on their own

Hospital, bank, factory floor or ministry: CMI's criteria name no industry. If your years meet them, the programme runs for you on its own. There is no published price for that yet, so we scope it with you.

Not yet for First-time managers. If you have managed for under three years, you do not meet either condition yet. Start with Gradeline's first-time manager training, which is in development, and come back when the years are there. That training is ours, not CMI's, and it does not count towards CMgr. Your years in the job do. See first-time manager training Anyone who wants a course certificate. CMgr is a title CMI awards after assessing you, not a class you attend.

He holds the title he prepares you for.

Hj. Mazlee is a Chartered Manager and a Fellow of CMI. He is a former Group General Manager of Kulim Hi-Tech Park, the Kedah state-owned corporation behind Malaysia's first high-technology industrial park. He has hired, promoted and been accountable for people at scale.

Every application is read by him, not a coordinator.

Your written application is marked by hand before it goes to CMI, and he runs the professional discussion with you as a rehearsal before you face the real one.

We prepare you for the conversation. The assessor is independent, and the decision is CMI's.

What you are actually buying

Leading is the part you have done. CMI assesses it from what you write and what you say.

CMI's assessment asks you to account for your management twice: once in writing, once out loud to an independent assessor. The years are yours already. This programme gets them onto the page and ready to defend.

Checking you qualify

Your management years set against CMI's Full Assessment criteria before you pay. If they fall short, we say so and tell you when to come back.

Writing the application

Your leadership and management journey, written so an independent assessor can follow it, then marked by hand.

Rehearsing the discussion

Hj. Mazlee plays the assessor's side of the online professional discussion, so the first time you answer those questions out loud is not the real one.

One mentor, two titles

On the CEng programme, the leadership you dig out for your CEng file is the starting material for CMgr. One person reads both.

We don't teach you to manage. We build the evidence that you do.

Questions people actually ask

Can I do CEng and CMgr together?

Yes. That is what the add-on is for: RM2,500 on top of the RM3,500 CEng programme fee, with Hj. Mazlee mentoring both. They are separate titles from separate bodies, assessed separately, with fees paid to each. CMgr keeps its own eligibility, so the management years above apply to you as an engineer too. Whether you run the two side by side or one after the other, we decide with you at the start, from how much leadership you have to show.

I'm a first-time manager. Can I apply?

Not on the route we prepare candidates for. In CMI's words, its Full Assessment route asks for "a degree level qualification that is management, business or leadership focused; plus 3 years' experience in a management role", or "at least 5 years' management experience (equivalent to Level 5 or operational / senior management)". CMI lists its other routes on its own website. If you are new to leading a team, start with Gradeline's first-time manager training (in development), at /leadership/first-time-managers. That training is ours, not CMI's, and it does not count towards CMgr. The years you spend managing do.

I've led project teams for years but only had direct reports recently. What counts?

CMI describes the five-year condition as management experience "equivalent to Level 5 or operational / senior management". CMI decides what counts as management experience, not us. At the first conversation we set each of your roles against CMI's criteria with you, and if the years are not there yet, we say so before you pay.

Is this a CMI qualification?

No. The Chartered Route for CMgr is mentoring. It prepares you for CMI's assessment. CMI runs that assessment, the assessor is independent, and CMI alone decides whether to award CMgr. Nothing you receive from us is a CMI qualification, and CMI does not endorse this programme.

I'm not an engineer. Is this for me?

Yes, if your years meet CMI's criteria. They name no industry. On its own, the programme has no published price yet, so we scope it with you. The first thing we do is check your management years against the criteria, before you pay anything.

What does CMI charge?

CMI sets its own fees, and you pay them directly to CMI. We don't print them here because they are CMI's to change. Check the current figures on managers.org.uk before you register, and we will go through them with you at the first conversation.

How is CMgr different from an MBA?

An MBA is a degree you study for. CMgr is a professional title CMI awards after assessing the management you have done. If your MBA is "a degree level qualification that is management, business or leadership focused", in CMI's words, the Full Assessment route asks for 3 years' experience in a management role instead of the five-year condition. Whether your MBA counts is CMI's decision, and we check it with you before you pay.

Not sure your years count?

Send us your management history in a few lines. We'll tell you which way in fits, or that it is too early.
