In their words

The engineers who did it.

Hj. Mazlee Md. Ramli has taken more than 300 engineers through the programme over seven years. Here, some of them say what it took, in their own words.

We run it every two weeks, on Wednesdays at 9 PM.

Becoming a chartered engineer is one of greatest achievements in my life and being recognised internationally, makes me to be more confidant with my experience and knowledge . Since I started the program, I have felt the difference in organising my experiences and knowing my achievements on a personal level. I strongly encourage all engineers or academicians to be professionally registered.

Being admitted as a Chartered Engineer with a reputable institution such as IET UK is a recognition of my professional experience and competencies as a Mechanical Engineer in the Power Generation industry, which is to be on par with other qualified Engineers globally. In addition to that, it also increases my reputation within the industry allowing me to gather more attention when sharing innovative ideas related to my field. It also opens up a large network of Engineers globally that I can collaborate with to learn and further develop myself.

Becoming a chartered engineer signifies another milestone in my journey, to contribute to the betterment of society, industry, and academia. The recognition provides a stepping stone for my voice to be heard. It becomes a bridge to existing gaps between those in universities, and those who are practicing engineering in industries. Chartership provides an engagement platform, and I would encourage local engineers whether in academia or industries to hop onto this platform for engagement, collaboration, and ultimately contribution to the society at large.

I would say that becoming a CEng will give me a broad and lots of opportunities, to spread out my knowledge and engineering activities, to the community and society. This is the right platform for me to share with the world the experiences, in engaging with engineering projects, that bring me up to the international standard of practice. With that, I would like to encourage all engineers, particularly in Malaysia to register as CEng, so that what we can do is, “to speak at the same voice, to walk on the same path.

As for myself, throughout this process, I've been able to look back into all the works that I have done, re-evaluate them with fresh perspectives, and reframe my contributions to the engineering profession and to the society. Along the way, it has helped me gain greater appreciation towards my own works and allowed me to identify my professional qualities, some of which weren't so crystal clear before my eyes. Having real and honest appreciation towards your own selves and works is important as a strong support for you to continuously be motivated to serve the community of which you are in. All in all, I see that the title is just something that comes along with the recognition, but the real values are in the confidence that your peers have upon your capabilities and potential to contribute professionally, the global network of engineering communities that you are a part of to support your growth, and the responsibilities that have been entrusted upon you to serve the society in the best way possible.

[The programme] is very helpful to assist me to registered as a Chartered Engineer (CEng). To all local engineers out there, becoming a Chattered Engineer (CEng) is not only recognising your skills, experience and commitment as an engineer to your peers, employee and public, but it also proves to people that you have all the competency aspects such as engaged in optimising technology application, able to develop appropriate solution to engineering problems, involved in technical and commercial leadership and possess effective interpersonal skills.

Being a “Charted Engineer” is always a dream for any engineers around the world disregards to their engineering field or nature of work. The status of “Charted Engineer” empowers me as a Professional Engineer with the capacity to apply, deliver or expand the knowledge of science and technology by optimising natural resources to the benefit of humankind and environment as a whole. I’m very grateful to my mentor, who guided and supported me throughout the entire process from submission until the interview. Now as a “Charted Engineer” from The Institution of Engineering and Technology will help to elevate my career to the next level.

For me as lecturer in one of the technical universities, CEng that I have earned can help the university to achieve its mission and vision as well as assist in the process of accreditation for the program that we offered. At the same time, encouraging other staff to work together to get Chartered Engineer because it is one of the requirements to be fulfilled to ensure that the program offered is recognized by a professional body.

When I started my first job as a Graduate Engineer, which involved rotations to three different business units, I lamented my "bad luck" as some of the work that I had to do, was not related at all to what I studied during my degree. Why on earth did I have to review civil drawings when I studied Electrical and Electronics for four years? Later as I move along in my career, I realised that it is what being an engineer is all about. There are always new problems that need to be solved, and how a problem is being solved tomorrow, may not be the same as how it is solved yesterday. I consider myself as although I have now ventured into procurement and supply chain, I am always connected to engineering as my day-to-day tasks and that motivated me to etch my status, as a professional engineer by becoming a Chartered Engineer. Having been a student member of the IET, and eventually a Member of the IET (MIET), I decided to apply for CEng through IET. I always thought the CEng application requirement to be very daunting, but thankfully the guidelines from A1, has been very easy to follow and made the whole process to become very structured. Alhamdulillah, after one year (I procrastinated a lot!), I managed to submit my application, and was invited for Professional Review Interview a few months after that. Again, completing a mock PRI withA1, really put me at ease for the real PRI, and all in all, it turned out to be a very enjoyable experience. My main interviewer was an ex-British Royal Air Force General who served in World War 2, so you can just imagine all the fascinating stories that he shared during the interview . For all engineers aspiring to become a Chartered Engineer, I whole- heartedly encourage you to do it now as there are so many things that you can learn about yourself as you go through the process.

To be in engineering is optional. When you become engineer, to be professional is actually compulsory. The world needs us to ensure the sustainability of the world. So, we also need to continuously improve ourselves aligned to the advancement of the technology. Being professional is not just a title. It is a standard that we can walk the same path, act the same behaviour and talk the same language. Let's be a professional engineer.

To be awarded the status of CEng is a personal accomplishment and recognition to my work in the semiconductor industry. It means that I have achieved a new milestone in my career as a Chartered Engineer from the world-renowned Engineering Council of UK. By obtaining this prestigious title, it opens new doors for me to explore the industry and academia, at the local and international scene which otherwise would have been restricted to a narrow scope of engineering.

Becoming a Chartered Engineer has made me be a more confident and responsible engineer. I am recognised in the industry as someone who has demonstrated competencies against an internationally recognised standard. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole process of obtaining the Chartered Engineer. I would recommend getting chartered to my fellow engineers. Getting chartered is a great confidence boost, respected by colleagues and has credibility within the industry.

First and foremost, I would like to express my gratitude by saying thank you for all your help in guiding me obtaining my CEng. The experience I have gained while preparing my paper for CEng registration was challenging and fun at the same time. But all of it is worth it once I received a letter from IET saying that I have passed the Chartered Engineer registration. To be working in the underdog industry such as Palm Oil Mill, I can hardly see any engineer in the same field that has obtained a CEng certificate. Therefore, to seek guidance from more experienced people in this field is almost impossible but with much dedication and focus along with the help of Tn. Mazlee, I was able to do it. Nothing is impossible if you put your effort and time in something that you put your mind into it. I would like to encourage all engineers out there to start thinking and working your way in obtaining the CEng especially engineers in the same field as mine so that we can create a healthy community with competent CEng that can help bring this industry into the future. To be called a professional engineer means that people look up to you therefore it helps me to push myself harder in widening my engineering knowledge.

As an engineer, I believe that we should associate ourselves with any professional body or institution be it either local or international. This is one of the ways for us to enhance the overall status of our profession. I would encourage any potential engineers to find out the requirements, as soon as they have been involve and given the responsibilities that they have had. These can be used as evidence when they put in their application. The support from a good mentor is hugely beneficial and for me, I will not be able to sail this journey smoothly without the support of my mentor and superior. As a professional/chartered engineers, we must honour the recognition. Gaining a professional title establishes a person's proven knowledge, understanding, and competence to a set standard and demonstrates their commitment to developing and enhancing his/her competence to engineer a better world.

I want to express how much of an impact becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng) has had on my professional life. It symbolises my dedication to excellence, integrity, and lifelong learning. By attaining this prestigious title, we become part of a community of experts, competence leaders, and problem solvers; and by striving for Chartered Engineer status, we elevate the recognition of local engineers internationally. It is such an absolute honour being awarded as Chartered Engineer by esteemed Engineering Council. Walking the path of engineering is not easy at all. The lonely nights at power plants as a mechanical engineer located in a foreign country far away from home remain fresh in my mind. Now, it's like a dream come true for me and my family, and I know this is only the beginning of a long journey of building a greater future. The more I live my life as an engineer the more I come to realise technology is forever changing, I cannot predict what is the world going to be like in 50 years from now, but with the engineering knowledge and skills I gained particularly in the industry of power generation industry, I will continue to spread positivity, innovate and share my knowledge with other fellow engineers especially the juniors hoping to build a strong convergence encouraging them to strive to be an internationally recognised Chartered Engineer to make an impact to mankind.

I never thought I would continue to look out for other professional accreditation once I completed my Professional Engineer with BEM. But I realised something missing from my portfolio, which is to get global recognition as a professional engineer from such a prestigious organisation like the UK Engineering Council. I see CEng status as the platform for me to further broaden and extend my engineering knowledge and boost my career opportunities globally. I hope I can be the source of inspiration to my colleagues to follow my footsteps in becoming the next Chartered Engineer. This accreditation will motivate me to continue to strive for other professional status and most importantly contribute to my community.

I pursue to become a Chartered Engineer because of the credibility and recognition. Besides that, it emphasises on the professional growth and development. In addition, Chartered Engineer adhere to a code of ethics that promotes integrity, fairness and public welfare, fostering trust in the engineering profession. Local engineers with a Chartered Engineer knowledge can contribute to community development by ensuring that infrastructure projects meet safety and quality standards. They can serve as role models and mentors for upcoming engineers, encouraging more individuals to pursue and achieve Chartered Engineer.

Becoming a Chartered Engineer (CEng) through the IET is a significant achievement especially for myself. It represents growth and continuous learning. I encourage all local engineers and academicians to pursue this recognition. It opens new professional opportunities and raises the standard of engineering in our community. While we often follow instructions from our superiors at work, adhering to the UK Spec guidelines helps us think and solve problems in a structured way, focusing on solutions and impacts rather than just tasks. In simple manner, it helps to remind us why we pursue our career in engineering with the providing solution as our main goal.

Many engineering graduates would always like to be recognised as a Professional engineer while for experienced engineers who have been working for quite long in their career then becoming Professional Chartered Engineer is even more special. When you become a Chartered Engineer, it demonstrates to your employers and clients that you have had your competence independently assessed, your credential verified, and have made a commitment to Continues Professional Development. There are many benefits when you are accepted as a registered Professional Chartered Engineer besides the eligibility for using the title CEng. To me , being CEng it will also give: • Recognition as a professional in your field • Improved career opportunities and salary prospects • Greater influence within your organization • Opportunities to connect with influential and inspirational people • International recognition of your professional competence and commitment I really encourage all the engineers/academician in Malaysia should try to become a registered professional.
